I don’t shoot many family portrait sessions but my afternoon with the Doughty family may have turned the tides. This is honestly my favorite session that I have shot potentially well, ever. I don’t mean my favorite session this year or my favorite session in recent history. I mean my favorite session ever. From the moment I was greeted by Sebastian and Amos I knew we were going to have a pretty great time but then Julia and Jon told me they were going to be making juice and I was over the moon excited. Four good looking humans doing one of my favorite things? Sign me up.
You know that feeling you get when you walk into a space and everything is just exactly right? Not too cold or too warm, not too noisy or too quiet, not too cluttered but not too clean – that was the feeling I got when I walked into John and Julia’s modern little home on the west side of the state line. I had seen photographs on Instagram of the incredible space this family called home but I had no idea how welcoming it would feel. Let’s be honest most places worthy of the “gram” often make you feel like you can’t touch anything or you might leave a mark but not the Doughty residence. It may have been the plants growing around the rooms, or the way the light came through the giant windows, or the way the boys toys were scattered about their bedroom. Me? I think it was these four (nearly five) humans energy that made this place feel so great and made it so that I wasn’t quite ready to leave when we were finished.
